The city’s relationship with the water was called into dramatic question in 2005 during Hurricane Sandy. Over the course of Manhattan’s development, the city has progressively lost its essential relationship with nature. The growth in development and industry progressively hardened the edges of the island in an effort to control and separate the East River from the land.
This project seeks to reintroduce a fuzzier edge. One that works with the rhythms in the tides to create new possibilities about access. Each of the three zones in this project deal with water in different ways as a means of re-educating the public about natural tidal rhythms through recreation.
